How to remove and reinstall a pulley on the Continental water pump.

How to remove the pulley and not lose your mind!

If you have to replace the water pump pulley on your welder—and this applies to most engines—here is the procedure we recommend.

Before you remove the pulley, measure or mark the shaft so you will know how far to press the pulley on.

1. Do not use a multi-jaw puller; you will break the pulley. I know we sell replacement pulleys. The pulley is weak on the edges and will break. You have been warned!

  1. Use a gear or hub puller

to pull the pulley with four bolts. The pulley is a very tight press fit.

You want to pull it from the center with equal force distributed through four bolts.

How to reinstall your pulley and not destroy your pump.

Step 1

Remove the backing plate to expose the pump impeller. You will notice the steel impeller does not touch the back plate. If you lay the pump flat and try to push on the pulley, you'll break the casting. Mechanics/technicians are taught to replace parts, not repair parts.

Step 2

The pulley needs to be pressed on with a hydraulic press. Place a steel block on the impeller.

Now you are pushing directly on the pump shaft; it won't break.

Time to reinstall the back plate. Here is how to do it.

1. The aluminum casting of water will warp. Before reinstalling the back plate, check the level (true flatness of the casting). If you have a flat true metal or glass plate, you can check for any low spots.
