The Only Upgrades for Your Miller Big 40 Welder
Here at Weldmart, we love the original Miller Big 40 engine drive welder. We do not see many come through our shop (mostly engine problems); they are simple to work on. They will put out 400 amps, which you need to arc gouge with a 1/4 inch carbon. No non-repairable PC board to control anperare, just a replaceable big ugly rheostat! This machine will not weld pipe like an SA200, live with it!
The easiest and most proactive upgrade is to upgrade your Prestolie points system with an electronic module. We have been selling our upgrade system for over thirty years with no complaints.

Our system includes a thermal overload sensor, very simple to install. If the engine overheats, it shuts down before you can burn it up! We also provide the parts you need to install a low-oil-pressure automatic engine kill. Many conversation kits have problems with module failure, we have had a few. They were traced to defective ignition coils. These coils should have primary resistance of no less than 3 ohms (the resistane actoss the two small brass posts. Thes3e coils normally get too hot to hold in your hand. If the internal resistor fails it murders the electronic module. There are so many cheap Chinese coils on the web, we just added an external ballast resistor-problem solved!

The above images show what the upgrade looks like. You need to replace not only the points plate, but also a different rotor and a larger distributor cap. They are available, difficult to identify.

The above image is the Weldmart mounting plate that the coil assemblies mount on. This puts the coil in the cooling air stream
The Weldmart Upgrade Oil filter system for Miller Big 40 Welders with the Continental F163 Engine.
You have to remember that the Continental came on the market somewhere in the late `1920's. It was originally designed as an automotive engine for car companies that could not produce their own engine. Engineering has advanced significantly in the last 96 years.
It was designed in an era when detergent oil was unavailable and for burning leaded fuel. It will run fine on regular gasoline. The problem is the bypass oil filter system. A very small amount of oil is drawn from the "high pressure" port, passed through the filter, and then returned to the oil pan. The more filtered, faster is the simplest answer to the problem

In our system we recommend the GM style 2 quart filter, all the major brands make a version, It is a common filter for heavy duty GM gasoline engines. If your in a bind there is a very common 1 quart version
