During the 90s, Century Mfg produced a line of plasma cutters that we damn near bulletproof. Simple and straightforward, very easy to use, and easily maintainable.

They used Hypertherm plasma torches, parts were expensivee, but you could get them.

When a customer asked me what used plasma I would recommend, I tell them to look for Century YA-5550, Dayton, Marquette, or Snap-On 50 amp plasma cutter. The machines are electrically identical. Century Mfg. manufactured them. The used Hypertherm hand torches (now obsolete) are a mystery, as nobody seems to know anything about them! They will produce an honest 50 amps of cutting current, which they can cut 1/2" steel at production speed, by hand.

Please keep your eyes open, I have customers who have been given machines because nobody knows their value.

Clean air and 240 volts single-phase AC are all you need. These machines

They are easy to maintain and repair.

In the 1990s, Century produced their plasma machines with repairable PC control boards with function LED lights to identify machine function. You can quickly identify the PC board function. You can quickly. If the LED comes on, it gives you a place to start troubleshooting. It assists you in becoming more technically self-sufficient.

THE WEAKNESS OF THE ORIGINAL CENTURY 50 AMP PLASMA

images (20)_edited.jpg

The original Century 50-amp machine came with a Hypertherm PAC-110 hand torch. It was a good torch, but a 40-amp torch. At the time, the most significant current capacity type of torch for this design was.  It would cut with 50 amps, but not for long, it would overheat and die a brutal death.

The machine has a very robust transformer, designed to run on 220 volts single-phase power. Our country is growing so fast that the power grid cannot keep up with demand. To alleviate part of the problem, they bring the voltage up to line level. Higher line voltage, more power. The transformer doesn't care; feed it higher voltage, and it produces more amps-that's its job. The 40-amp torch is too weak; a 50-amp or higher amperage torch is needed.

Due to the lack of support for plasma equipment from the original manufacturers and the numerous vendors offering torches, many of whom only sell a gadget and have little to no knowledge of the equipment, the situation is complicated.
