You can weld certain wires with a constant current "stick welder." The most common is aluminum; you need a "constant current wirefeeder". Most welding supply salesmen have never heard of one. When you are doing small jobs and repairs, a spool gun is the "Swiss Army Knife" of welding. Our Profax spool guns will push any alloy you can get on a 4" standard spool. The smallest spool size available is 7"-you can re-spool your own wire. Our gun will push any alloy from 0.025" to 1/16". It can be used with self-shielded alloy (gasless flux core wire).

The basic design of the AEC spool gun goes back to the late 1950s. The original design of the motor in the handle was patented by the Airco Corp. When the original patents expired, everybody made their own spool guns. In the 1980's, the Airco company dissolved, and Profax (in Texas) picked up the design and improved it. The gun is robust teh cover is strong fiberglass, not cheap plastic. The system is very simple. The control box contains the power supply and electronic control for wire speed, as well as a contactor. This contactor turns the welding power on/off at the gun. The spool gun has a mechanical gas valve. We have been selling this system for over eighteen years, with no failures.
